Cardiology or Cardiac SurgeryCardiology or Cardiac Surgery
Angioplasty - An angioplasty or Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) is a method of dilating a narrowed portion of the heart blood vessels (coronry arteries) by inflating a balloon so that blood can pass through the vessels freely. This can be used as a treatment for angina and reduces the chances of a heart attack. Angiography - This procedure is used to visualise the coronary arteries so that any blockages can be identified and graded. This is useful in those suffering from the chest pain or angina. Ear Nose Throat Surgery Thyroidectomy - Part or all of the thyroid gland, which is located in a front of the lower neck, above the windpipe, may need to be removed. This may be due to enlargement of the thyroid or other disease of the thyroid such as a tumour. Tonsillectomy - A tonsillectomy operation removes the 2 tonsil glands which are found at the back of the throat. There function is not properly understood but is thought to be related to the immune symptom to fight infections. Weight Loss Surgery Obesity surgery - Obesity is now well recognised as an increasing medical problem in most developed countries. It is generally caused by an excessive intake of calories in the form of an unhealthy and high fat diet together with an increasingly sedentary lifestyle with little or no physical exercise. Bariatric Surgery - Obesity surgery can also be known as Bariatric Surgery, Lap Banding, Gastric Banding or Gastric Bypass Surgery. The exact type of procedure patients have depends on the general health of the patient, the extent of their obesity and on the surgical expertise available. Of course, for a surgical option to be considered, patients must be fit enough for anaesthesia. |
